So far this summer, I’ve been spending a lot of time reading, which is something I should do more of but usually don’t because I always feel like there is something else I should be doing. Reading is so indulgent that I often feel guilty taking the time. However, as a writer I should be reading daily. In addition to various novels, I’ve been reading craft books. School’s Out For Summer! School’s Out Forever!

Today marks my last day as a teacher. It’s the end of an era for me. I’ve spent the past eleven years as a public school teacher, the first two of those at a middle school and the remaining nine at the same high school. Before that I taught college freshmen as part of my graduate program, so overall I’ve been teaching thirteen years. I’d like to say the decision to leave the classroom was a hard one. But truthfully?
